History of the Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies were used in Siberia to pull sleds and provided the main form of transport for many years.

Because of their importance in providing such an important form of transport, they were exceptionally well cared for and respected and perhaps it is this that has created such a kind natured breed.

Huskies first arrived into Alaska early on in the 20th Century and were at that time known as Chuckchis, so named because they were used by the Chuckchis in Siberia in the 19th Century.

America embraced the breed, using their strength and speed in pulling sledges hence the conception of sled racing. America was responsible for naming the breed the "Siberian Husky" in the 20th Century.

Appearance of the Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies are instantly recognisable; both as the sled dogs that we so often see portrayed on TV, and also because of their wolf like appearance.

The Siberian Husky is a medium sized dog, with a thick coat and brush tail. They are light and graceful in movement with a firm muscular frame.

They have erect ears and almond shaped eyes, with an almost mischievious expression. Their eyes can be brown or blue, one of each or even partial colours in any variety.

Temperament of the Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky is well renowned for its excellent temperament; these are dogs who love people and thrive in a busy family environment.

Because of their love of company, these dogs do not adjust well to being left alone for long periods of time; they are likely to become stressed and as a result, potentially destructive.

Their good nature means that Huskies are not natural guard dogs; they are not suspicious of strangers.

Grooming a Siberian Husky

Surprisingly, considering their dense coat, Siberian Huskies require only moderate combing and brushing, with more grooming required during moulting.

Siberian Husky Exercise Requirements

Siberian Huskies require a considerable amount of exersize daily, in the region of 1 hour 30 minutes at least.

Siberian Huskies have a tendancy to run off and are known for not returning on command, so off-lead work should be avoided without absolute confidence that the dog will come when called.

In addition to this, a well fenced garden is required; bearing in mind that the Siberian Husky possesses an ability to jump extreme heights from a standstill!!

Siberian Husky Health Problems

The Siberian Husky does not tend to be susceptable to illness and is a generally healthy breed.

Occasional eye prolems can occur in some Siberian Huskies, including cataracts, PRA and corneal dystrophy.
